Filibuster Proof Would have Been A Hard Swallow

It is a good thing the Democrats where denied a filibuster-proof majority in the US Senate branch of Congress. The Republican party has done an unremarkable job this past election cycle and the Democrats have not shown themselves to be made up of what truly made America great. Mr. Obama may have won, but God does not approve of his abortion or gay rights policies. His win should serve to show the Republican party that God's laws are still the best paths to follow.

Where Does Mark Stand On The Issues?

Abortion & End Of Life Decisions
I believe in the sanctity of human life from conception to old age. Unborn children are created in God’s image and are precious humans, not fetuses. The aged should be allowed to die in peace and with dignity.

Crime
Prison should be as a place of punishment. Our first priority for criminals should be to punish them and make them pay back their victims and society for their crimes. Capital punishment is a strong deterrent to crime and the responsibility of government.

Education
Education should be God-centered and effective. Students should be taught respect and good moral character, history, English, science and math. I do not not support lowering graduation standards. Crime, violence and disrespect to authority should not be tolerated in our schools. I am generally not in favor of college grants. However, in certain circumstances, they may be helpful. I worked my way through all of my education and I believe that the experience is helpful in training a young adult to be responsible.

Environment
We should work to develop and implement cleaner energy sources. I seeshope in flex-fuel, nuclear and renewable sources. I believe our lakes, mountains, parks and streams should be cared for as beautiful treasures of God’s creation. I support penalties against those who desecrate our surroundings and the safety of citizens by pollution, waste disposal and release of toxic chemicals.

Ethics
We should encourage principles which inspire a sense of honor and trust in serving our fellow man. Government service is one of honor and trust. I believe that elected officials are ultimately answerable to God for the way they lead and implement policy because government has been established by God to maintain order and justice.

Family
Marriage was designed by God to be between one man and one woman. Recognition by states of same-sex couples in marriage or otherwise is a perversion of God's law. This however does not mean Christian politicians should be hateful to homosexuals. We should also work to help single mothers with small children who are verifiably working to get ahead. Parents who fail to care for their children are a disgrace and should be punished.

Firearms
We have a God-given responsibility to protect our family and a Constitutional right to own and carry firearms. I am a proud NRA member. No one has the right to take away our freedom to protect our property, our homes, our families and ourselves.

Immigration
I am against illegal immigrants entering America's borders and receiving the same benefits and rights as legal citizens. Sanctuary laws attempt to avoid the issue. Businesses must follow reporting requirements or face penalties. I am 100% against encouraging amnesty and allowing illegal immigrants to receive the same benefits as legal citizens. As a US Marine vet, I believe in using all necessary force to protect our borders against unauthorized entry.

Jobs
Work should be an honorable word in America. Unions have done much to underestimate the value of honest hard work. Governments should strive to stay off the backs of businesses. Individuals with dreams create jobs, not governments. Manufacturing incentives and apprenticeships have an imortant place in our economy. Worker's compensation laws in Tennessee as elsewhere need to be more business friendly. Minimum wage laws are coubter-productive and interfer with contract negotiations.

Lottery
It is foolish to try to get something for nothing. Lotteries turn work into a dirty four letter word. Lotteries degrade the value of honest hard work and ridicule the punishment allotted to gambling. It also produces gambling addicts and destroys families.

Military
We must secure and protect our State and Nation in times of disaster, disease or unrest. As a Marine Corps Veteran, I strongly support Tennessee’s National Guard whether they are serving at home or abroad. I think it is important that they have the equipment they need to perform their various duties under the Governor as well as the President.

Pensions
I am against State-funded pensions because like most other systems that try to do everything for everybody, funding eventually falls behind. Individuals should be encouraged to save on their own and plan for their future without relying upon the government and Taxpayers.

Taxes
Taxes are the responsibility of citizens and more especially, of Christians. However, we are overtaxed in America. I think a straight sales tax for all is best because of its fairness. Tennessee has over twenty taxes in place. This is too much.

TennCare
Waste, mismanagement and fraud should continually be attacked in any governmnet program. We should care for those who are helpless however. We should encourage strong competitive bidding among providers. Provider contracts can be analyzed on an ongoing random basis to ensure compliance and business integrity. Orphan children, widows and the incapacitated should be given careful consideration. Drugs should be purchased competitively as long as they are safe. The healthcare crisis began as a national problem in 1938 and is still one today, some 67 years latter. Healthy lifestyles are always benefiscial. We should show the danger of willful obesity.

Welfare
God uses hard work to keep us physically, mentally and spiritually healthy. Those who are able to work should be requireds to work and get off welfare. We should help those who are physically & mentally unable to work. We should look to our abilities and ourselves first as we provide for our families and each other. Welfare policies are best suited to implementation by faith-based initiatives.

Mark's Bio-M. Div., J.D., USMC 1978-82

As A Youngster
Mark was born in 1961 in Massachusetts. He grew up in Kingston which is about 40 miles South of Boston and about 20 miles Northwest of Cape Cod. He started working on his Grandfather’s cranberry bogs at 10 years old. Mark dug irrigation ditches and spread sand with a shovel. During harvest, he loaded 50 lb wooden boxes of cranberries onto a truck bound for Ocean Spray. This is where Mark started to learn about the reality and blessings of hard work in life.

As A Marine
At seventeen, Mark enlisted in the Marine Corps. His father, now deceased, was a Korean War Veteran. While in the Marines, Mark served in the areas of amphibious assault and reconnaissance. He was deployed on an expeditionary force to the Indian Ocean during the American Embassy takeover in Iran. Mark became a Christian while in the Military and became involved in Koolau Baptist Church in Kaneohe, Hawaii. He helped to lead the church bus ministry for children and also ministered to service men and woman on his Marine base. He left the Marine Corps with an Honorable Discharge after four years of service.

Life After The Corps
While in the Marine Corps, Mark felt the need to go to school and prepare to serve others. Upon his exit from the Corps, Mark came to Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga where he earned his BA in Mission work. Desiring to help others and seeing the need for further education to prepare him for leadership possibilities, Mark went to Temple Baptist Seminary and earned a Master of Divinity degree in 1993. During his college years, Mark worked his way through school as a machinist and a landscape designer. He started his own landscaping company, operated it for several years and latter sold it. While Mark was working on his Masters, he took note of the downward spiral of America’s culture. He began to research the founding of America and became convinced that America had drifted away from her moorings. Desiring to be a part of the solution rather then an onlooker, he ran for the Tennessee State House in 1994. Following his State House bid, he determined that law school would better prepare him to defend the values he valued and to function as a servant for Christ in government. Mark earned his Juris Doctorate in 1999 from John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, GA.

Life Today
Mark knows he been richly blessed by the Lord. Mark has been married to his wife Sharon since 1991. Sharon is a compassionate and attentive RN. She is the daughter of career missionaries to Ghana, West Africa. Mark has been investing in real estate since 1991.

Why Mark Is Involved Politically
Mark is involved because he believes he has a the responsibility as a Christian man to step-up to better society. Mark's education, faith, age and life experiences have helped to produce a desire in him to serve God in government. Mark seeks to build consensus with all parties to fashion policies that are considerate of the interests of all. People in authority must realize they have been placed in that position to serve others. Mark believes he has a duty to serve in government and to aid others who do so. There is an overwhelming need in our State and Nation for people with moral standards who will not be swayed by political pressure, spending sprees or bribes.
